2014 Epsom Derby Betting Odds & Tips

The 2014 Epsom Derby is this Saturday at Epsom Downs. The prestigious G1 race is going to be extremely exciting. The 1 ½ mile turf race is open to 3-yo colts and Dawn Approach is the overwhelmingly favourite to win this year’s installment on the Derby.

A number of betting firms will be running special promos for the Derby this weekend. If you bet against Dawn Approach like me you want to bet at BetVictor or Ladbrokes. If Dawn Approach wins BetVictor will refund a losing bet for up to £50 and Ladbrokes for up to £25.

Top Contenders in the 2014 Epsom Derby

  • Dawn Approach (2.25)

Dawn Approach is all the talk leading up to the Derby and for good reason. Dawn Approach has won every race (7) that he has raced in including the G1 2000 Guineas earlier this month at Newmarket. The Bolger trained colt will be raced by Kevin Manning.

As long as Dawn Approach can stay the distance he’ll win the Derby like his sire (New Approach) did in 2008. The 2000 Guineas was the longest race he has been in and the only concern bettors have is that New Approach may not excel at the distance.

  • Battle of Marengo (6.00)

Aidan O’Brien has five colts in the field for the Derby, but none with a better shot than Battle of Marengo. Battle of Marengo is undefeated in his L5 starts including two wins in 2014 at the G3 Ballysax Stakes and G2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial.

Both of his wins in 2014 were on a 1 ¼ track, so going the distance shouldn’t be as big of a concern. I feel the biggest challenge for Dawn Approach is going to be Battle of Marengo, but he has struggled a bit down the stretch in his recent outings.

  • Mars (15.00)

Mars is very lightly raced, but has been a popular selection due to the hype surrounding the colt. The O’Brien trained colt won his maiden in his debut last year and was the favourite to win the Derby, but he’s now 15.00 after a 6th at the 2000 Guineas.

  • Ocovango (9.00)

Ocovango is an interesting selection that should have no problem staying the distance and challenging down the stretch in this year’s Derby at Epsom Downs. Ocovango is 3-0 in his career including two wins this year in France at 1 5/16 mile and 1 ¼ mile.

Andre Fabre trains Ocovango and he was the trainer of Pour Moi who won the Derby in 2011. He isn’t going to jump out to a lead, but he has the stamina to last the distance and he could pull off a surprise down the stretch if he races to his potential.

2014 Epsom Derby Predictions

There are a number of great colts racing in the Derby on Saturday, but I like the Ocovango to upset Dawn Approach. I don’t like the short odds and the fact that Dawn Approach hasn’t raced in a race over 1 mile in his career yet.
