The 2014 US Open gets underway on Monday. In this betting preview I want to talk about who I think will win on the women’s and men’s side of the draw plus I want to point out a few players coming into this tournament on fire that could pull off an upset or two.

2014 US Open ATP & WTA Outright Winner Predictions

In recent years the US Open has been a wide open tournament and no one has dominated the field in awhile. In the last 3 years on both the men’s and women’s draws there has been a different winner. Andy Murray and Serena Williams won the event last year.

Novak Djokovic (3.25) is the #1 seed in the US Open, but Rafael Nadal (3.00) is the favourite in the outright market. Djokovic won the Aussie Open earlier this year on the hard court and he has made the finals in the last 3 years in this tournament (Won in 2011).

Nadal comes into this tournament in better hard court form though. Nadal won the Rogers Cup (Knocked out Djokovic in SF) and he finished 2nd in Cincinnati (Lost to Isner).Nadal and Isner are likely to meet in round 4, which will be a great match-up to watch.

In the women’s draw I don’t think anyone from the top half of the draw will eliminate Serena Williams (1.80). Williams has been on a tear this season and she’ll want to win back-to-back US Open’s. I wouldn’t bet on anyone from the top half in the outright market.

It’s likely that Victoria Azarenka (4.10) will make her 2nd consecutive US Open final, but she’ll likely face a tough test if she ends up meeting Petra Kvitova (34.00). Kvitova is in decent form right now and I expect her to make the semi-finals this year.

  • Bet on Rafael Nadal 3.00 & Victoria Azarenka 4.10 E/W

Underdogs to Watch for at the 2014 US Open Grand Slam

Most of the money will turnover in the match markets at the US Open. I want to point out some of the players that are coming into this tournament in great form that could pull off an upset or two later in the tournament once we get past the 1st couple rounds.

Milos Raonic finished 2nd in the Rogers Cup, as he lost to Nadal. Raonic is always a threat on hard courts because of his serve. He beat Del Potro and Gulbis in the Roger Cup. John Isner is on fire right now with a win in Indianapolis and two 2nd place finishes on the HC.

Magdalena Rybarikova on the women’s side is going to be a tough out on the hard court. She has looked good on the hard court in the lead up to this tournament and she has recent victories over McHale, Kerber, Petkovic (Citi Open Finals), Bartoli and Cornet.

Gulbis is another player on the men’s side that should actually make some noise because of the easy draw he has. The problem is he is going to be a favourite in his matches and most likely by a lot. However, Gulbis is a tough out and could pull a late upset in the QF.
