A Beginners Guide to Asian Handicapping

What is Asian Handicap Betting?

One type of betting service you may come across online is a bookmaker offering Asian Handicapping. This is, as the name suggests, a very popular way to bet in parts of Asia, and how it works is that when a football match is available to be bet on, then the bookmaker offering this Asian Handicapping service will do away completely with the Draw element of the bet and only offer odds on either the home team to win or the away team to win.

How they manage to do this (when the result could indeed be a draw), is to simply give one of the two teams an advantage, with the aim of trying to give punters a winning payout as close as possible to even money. Now this may seem a little far fetched, but imagine Manchester United playing against Alfreton Town during an FA Cup round. In such a case, the team which is expected to lose will be given a massive starting advantage.

So, should Manchester United be playing Alfreton Town, then the latter named team would be given a massive head start by starting the game with many goals under their belt for the betting purposes. However the goal difference will also be a fraction of a goal , so for example Alfreton may be given for Asian Handicapping betting purposes a 5.25 goal lead, this ensures that the match cannot possibly end in a draw as if Manu Utd in our example scored 5 goals then Alfreton would win, conversely if Man Utd scored 6 goals and Alfreton no goals then Utd would win.

You may be wondering why any Alfreton supporter would want to possibly bet on their team winning this imaginary match by placing an Asian Handicapping style wager when all they would get is nearly even money on their bet and when in a standard football betting wager, they would get huge odds. Well the answer to this works the opposite way, as it offers a Man Utd fan the chance of wagering at much better odds via the Asian Handicap than they could ever dream of in the standard betting environment!

Plus there are many more Utd fans than Alfreton ones so the volume of money on the former would outweigh the few bob spent by Alfreton fans!

Examples of Asian Handicapping

To give you a better example of Asian Handicapping in action, you will find below a selection of recent football matches along with details of the standard odds offered by some of the major UK bookmakers along with the equivalent Asian Handicapping odds offered for the very same match, and you will see for yourself just how this works in practice.

In a recent match between Ismaning vs Bayern Munchen the standard betting odds were Ismaning to win 21.98, the match to end in a draw was 11.35 and Bayern Munchen to win was a tiny 1.03. However the Asian Handicapping odds were given and Ismaning was given a 2 and 3/4’s goal start and this goal advantage for the outsider meant the Asian Handicapped odds were 2.225 for Ismaning to win and 1.675 for Bayern Munchen to win.

A recent match featuring two English sides (Morecambe playing at home against Everton), saw the win odds for Morecambe being 5.76 whilst the draw was 4.08, and Everton to win the match (the most likely outcome) was available at odds of 1.49. However the Asian Handicapping odds offered were put in place with Morecambe being given a 1 goal lead and as such the odds offered became 2.25 for Morecambe to win and Everton to win with one goal behind before they started to play being offered at Asian Handicapped odds of 1.65.

Now in the case of the Morecambe vs Everton match this game could still possibly end in a draw as Morecambe have a one goal lead and no fractional goal is added to their score, and this is where the push rule in Asian Handicapping comes into play, should a sporting fixture using the Asian Handicapping style of betting end in a Draw then the game is declared a push and all stakes are returned.
