2014 F1 Drivers Championship Tips

The F1 season is about to start with the 1st race in Australia scheduled for March 17th 2014. There are nineteen races scheduled for this season with the final race in Brazil on November 24th 2014 due to the Grand Prix of America in New Jersey being cancelled.

HRT F1 is no longer a team after they couldn’t find a buyer and liquidated their assets. There were a few driver changes this year including Lewis Hamilton moving to Mercedes and Sergio Perez moving to McLaren. Schumacher also retired and won’t be back.

2014 F1 Drivers Championship Preview

In what came down to the final race of the season in 2014, Sebastian Vettel won the 2014 Drivers Championship. Alonso had the chance to beat Vettel, but his 2nd place finish in Brazil wasn’t quite enough, as Vettel finished 6th and earned just enough to win.

Vettel is going to look for his 4th consecutive title in 2014 and is the betting favourite. Vettel is still with Red Bull, but I don’t think that he’ll win the title again unless Red Bull has a special car that simply outclasses the rest of the competition.

My prediction like a lot of others this season is for Alonso to finally win the drivers championship with Ferrari. The key for Alonso is to race the entire season without retiring. Ferrari also has to put out a faster car from the start of the season in Australia.

Last season through the 1st 5 races Alonso had 61 points in the drivers championship standings due to a 9th place finish (China) and a 7th place finish in Bahrain. If he had a faster card to start last season he most likely would have beaten Vettel.

The Mercedes team is a lot more interesting now with Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton and his team mate Nico Rosberg are both great drivers, but the Mercedes car isn’t up to par with the top teams in F1 and I don’t expect either of them to contend this year.

I do expect Hamilton to win a Grand Prix in 2014, but not compete for the drivers’ championship. Raikkonen was impressive last season with a 3rd place finish in the drivers’ standings. He was a surprise last season, but won’t surprise anyone this season.

2014 F1 Drivers Championship Best Bet

There is little doubt that this year will be a battle between Vettel and Alonso again. Alonso was tipped by many to win last year, but a slow start hindered his chances. With a quick start in 2014 Alonso can settle in and win his 3rd career drivers championship.
